Training

To me, to be a responsible owner and handler, there are six basic obedience commands to teach your Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Saffy and I have mastered them all. We approached training using a positve-reinforcement, reward based system. That is, after she succeeded, I praised her and often rewarded her with a tidbit treat that I tapered off as she became proficient. I found Saffy to be a quick learner, definitely representative of her breed.

The six basic commands are:

  1. Sit - The dog will sit
  2. Stay - The dog will stay
  3. Come - The dog will recall on command
  4. Drop - The dog will lay down
  5. Heel - The dog will walk by your side without pulling
  6. No - The dog will cease and desist

When giving a command I found I had to be consistent. I announced her name, 'Saffy!', to gain her attention, and then with my 'command voice' I gave my desired command, 'Sit!'. So, it would sound like, 'Saffy! Sit!' Commanding, not asking, and using the same word every time so as not to confuse her. Consistency and a command tone is key!

Utilizing this process created the association of pleasure with my command action and encouraged her to repeat the action when commanded in the future. New commands were followed with frequent 'tidbit' rewards which I slowly tapered off as she gained proficiency with the command. Soon, I found, she became an expert!

You have to remember that they do not understand our language or any other language but they can understand and associate an action with a sound. This is called associative learning.

Remember... you are the pack leader.
